Topic: The Experience of Change and Transition within Sport: Learnings from the Story Arc
Bob Dylan’s iconic song “The Times They Are A-Changin” is a compelling call to embrace change or “sink like a stone”. The ability to navigate unpredictability is essential for both athletes and the sport system to remain buoyant in the world of high performance sport. This session will highlight “change” as experienced in the life of an athlete, examine transitions and learnings along the sport journey.
Vicki is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta from the Faculty of Physical Education & Recreation. She is a member of Canada’s Sport for Life Leadership team and is helping to advance physical literacy and long-term athlete development while improving the quality of sport across Canada. In 2011 and 2012, Vicki was honoured by CAAWS (Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity) as one of the Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity. Her combined experiences from 2 Olympic teams (1980 and 1984 Canadian Rowing), researching the female athlete as an academic, coaching an elite girls’ soccer team and being a parent have fuelled her passion to work with those who can make a difference in the world of high performance, particularly for girls and women.
