|How it Works|| |
Using 4 players per side, play a mini-game of baseball, using cones or small mats as bases. The pitcher places a soft ball on a mark in front of the batter, who can kick the ball when given the signal “Go.” The batter can kick it anywhere he/she wants but can contact the ball only once. After kicking the ball, the batter tries to run the bases. The fielders can catch the ball using their hands but must place it on the ground and kick it back to the pitcher, who can pick it up. If the pitcher places the ball on the batter’s mark before the batter runs the bases, the batter is out. If the batter runs the bases before the ball is placed, he/she scores a run. The teams change sides when everyone has had a chance to be batter. Experiment with the distance between bases to balance the opportunity for success for the batter and fielders. The number of players on a base does not matter — you may have a number of kids on the bases. Kids waiting in line to bat can be practising their balance.
To modify: have the batter take up to three steps to kick a larger ball that is rolled toward him/her. Fielders can kick the ball only to get it to teammates on bases. Keep the playing area small for best results.
