Jan Downing is truly someone who has embraced the outdoors – not an easy feat during a Yukon winter. When she’s away from her duties as a Winter Active for Life Coordinator she can be found volunteering her time as Cross-Country Yukon’s Green Squad coach for 11- to 14-year-olds and traveling as a support coach with the Yukon Ski Team.
Before settling in as a cross-country skiing coach she dabbled in soccer and swimming, and also supported the Yukon cycling team at the 1989 Canada Games in Saskatoon. Since then, she coached in British Columbia with the Sovereign Lake Nordic Club for 12 years and the Nakkertok ski club in Gatineau, Quebec before returning to the Yukon.
Jan definitely ‘walks-the-talk’ as an endurance coach and athlete. She’s competed in the Iditabike, the English Bay Swim, a triathlon in Alaska, and the Canadian Ski Marathon achieving “Coureur des Bois” status. Her ultimate feat, Jan once swam in a glacier fed lake in Northern BC as a fundraiser to restore an old paddlewheel lake boat. In order to survive she covered herself in bear fat.
