Darlene MacDonald - Biathlon
Name: Darlene MacDonald
Province: Prince Edward Island
NCCP Status: Competition – Introduction In Training
Mentor: Judy Hale
Fun Fact: Darlene enjoys cross stitch and knitting and has recently taken up machine quilting.
Darlene MacDonald’s road to coaching biathlon was sparked by a friend who asked her to help. Though she played a plethora of sports in her youth, Darlene had never participated in, or coached biathlon, but relished in the opportunity to engage in the interesting mix of precision shooting and high intensity skate skiing. She leveraged her prior coaching experience in softball and hockey and worked her way through the Community, and Competition – Introduction coaching curriculums for biathlon.
She has since coached the community biathlon program in PEI for 4 years and was the Team Manager for Team PEI at the 2011 Canada Winter Games. Her coaching responsibilities now include developing Masters athletes and those preparing for competition at the national level. Darlene is thankful for the support she received from all of the Team PEI biathlon coaching staff, including mentor coach Judy Hale, in preparation for the 2015 Games and is excited for her new role.
When Darlene isn’t on the range or in the trails, she can be found riding her bike, gardening, snowshoeing, skiing, or curling up with a good book under her homemade quilts.
