No ‘I’ in team for Lisa Thomaidis

Lisa Thomaidis may have been named the Canadian Interuniversity Coach of the Year twice during her 15 seasons as head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women’s basketball team, yet she’s not afraid to ask for guidance. This is what impresses Huskies point guard Kabree Howard the most about the coach. Howard was a point guard for the Huskies from 2010-15.

“She is considered to be one of the greatest female coaches in Canada, if not beyond, yet in the games she is always getting input from her assistant coaches,” Howard said. “This mentality flows from the top down. As a player, I was closer with my teammates because she set such an example as a coach.”

This spirit of collaboration helped the Huskies win two Canada West Championships (2010-11, 2013-14) during Howard’s time with the team. Howard enjoyed the first title because she got to see the excitement in her older teammates who had finally won for their coach, and she enjoyed the second one because she finally got to achieve that honour.

Beyond wins and losses, the everyday interactions with her coach really stood out to Howard.

“You learned something new from her every single day. Everything she said always had such meaning and would help with your game,” Howard said. “At the same time, when you are making those mistakes or she’s giving that feedback, the way that she goes about it is in a joking or humorous manner. You don’t take it so hard. She also tries to give you that confidence. Off the court, she teaches you how to conduct yourself as a person and act with integrity.”

Howard is returning to the Huskies as a grad assistant coach and says it’s quite the opportunity to learn from Lisa.
