What does your coach do that makes him/her a great coach?
There are many things that make Ben a great coach, but some stand out in particular. Ben is willing to give up some of his free time in order for us to succeed. This includes fitness sessions, longer lessons, goal setting, and planning meetings. Ben does these all on his own time and it definitely makes a large difference in our sport.
Write a memory/story about your coach.
During the 2015 Canadian Junior Nationals, I was playing in the quarter final match against a very tough competitor. It was going into the 5th game when Ben told me to just relax and have fun. This seemed like the exact opposite of what I needed to do, but it ended up working and I won the match in 5 games to move to the semi-finals. Ben helped me realize that a lot of coaching is to just motivate the athlete, keep him calm, and relaxed; this was a very large part of my success.
What lesson(s) has coach instilled in you?
I have been coached by Ben for so many years and I have learned so many things. Some of the lessons that he taught me were not only about squash, but about how to act as a mature professional athlete. These skills I have learned have been very useful and I owe it all to him.
Pick 3 words that describe your coach. Explain why you chose each word.
The three words I would use to describe my coach are motivation, determination, and belief. Ben motivates all of his athletes to simply be better. He is always determined to find ways to help you improve and he will always believe in you no matter your level.
