Program Objectives

  • To develop and maintain strategies to increase the number of certified women coaches actively coaching in high performance and development contexts
  • To increase the number of women coaches who are qualified for high performance and development context employment positions.

Amount Available

A total of approximately $30,000 is available in the CAC Women in Coaching 2010-2011 budget for National Coaching Institute (NCI) tuition scholarships of up to $1,500 for study in the two-year program and up to $3,000 for study in the one-year program. Candidates in the two-year program who receive a scholarship must re-apply the following year for scholarship funds as scholarships are awarded on an annual basis only. Please note that NCI directors are only required to submit the names of the coaches re-applying for a second WiC NCI tuition scholarship, a full application for those coaches on track for year 2 is not necessary.

Program description for 2010-2011

Scholarships are awarded annually to women coaches who attend one of seven NCIs located across Canada. Women coaches are eligible for a Women in Coaching NCI scholarship if they meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant currently coaching Canadian athletes
  • NCCP Level 3 certified
  • National Sport Organization (NSO) approved Level 4 candidate (if applicable) or approved to attend the NCI for completion of the Coaching Diploma Program
  • Has been accepted into the Diploma Program at one of the seven NCIs across Canada.

Candidates meeting the minimum criteria will be further considered using the following criteria:

  • Candidate is already in a committed year round coaching position and has been for more than 2 years
  • Achievability of Level 4 certification (if applicable).

Each NCI is eligible for up to $6,000 in scholarship awards. However, an NCI will not receive more funds than there are candidates. For example, an NCI with one eligible candidate in the two-year program would receive a single $1,500 scholarship.

Should there be unspent scholarship funds once each NCI has been awarded the minimum for which they are eligible, additional scholarships would be awarded to the next ranked candidates nominated by their NCI who have not yet been awarded a scholarship.
