What does your coach do that makes him/her a great coach?

Steve has a vast amount of experience in our sport and is located in our home town and club – not always the case in sailing!

Write a memory/story about your coach.

We have shared many memories; John has been working with Steve for over 10 years. A fond memory is sailing in Beijing 2008, Steve really stepped up to the plate and gave John and his teammate Stacie Louttit his best, which allowed them to perform at their best and that secure feeling helped him win the bronze medal. – Jackie Gay

What lesson(s) has your coach instilled in you?

Steve has instilled in us both the importance of time on the water and learning each lesson as it becomes apparent – there is always more to learn and every single time you sail it is different. He has also taught us the crucial importance of teamwork and communication. His enthusiasm when accompanying us to events is always a positive, steadying influence.

Other than the sport they coach you in, what sport would you like to watch your coach try?

It would be great to see Steve play wheelchair rugby because it is so much fun and a contact sport (unlike sailing – generally…). Plus we’re pretty sure his wheelchair skills could do with some brushing up!

Why do you want to say “thanks, coach”?

Thanks, coach for always believing in us and for staying focused and positive even when we hit the doldrums – there’s always a bit of champagne sailing around the corner.
